Line Plume: every field and setting explained

Every field well and every setting in the Line Plume Format pane and Analytics pane, including per-series settings, with default values and premium features.

Lire en français

This page describes everything Line Plume offers: the field wells, then each card of the Format pane, in the order they appear. The default value of each setting is in bold, and premium features carry a ★. For a guided first visual, see getting started. This page describes version 1.5 (reorganized Format pane: new Gridlines card, small multiples, error bars, zoom slider, combo chart).

X axis: continuous date or category?

The visual can draw two kinds of axes. You choose in Format › X axis › Axis type.

  • Continuous axis (Continuous): dates and numbers are spaced according to their real distance, like on a ruler. The ticks follow the calendar (years, quarters, months, weeks, days, hours). If March is missing, the gap between February and April shows. This is the usual case with a date column. The Date format setting only appears on a date axis.
  • Categorical axis (Categorical): each value takes a slot of the same width, in data order, and is displayed as is ("Q1 2025", "Batch A"). This is the case for a text column. The Long labels setting only appears on a categorical axis.
  • Automatic (the default) lets the visual choose based on the column type.

Tip: force Categorical on a date column if you want evenly spaced points despite gaps (business days without weekends, for example).

A column of years (2022, 2023, 2024) stored as whole numbers also works on a continuous axis.

Several lines: several measures or the Legend field?

There are two ways to get several lines. They can't be combined.

Several measures, no LegendOne measure + the Legend field
What you dragStore Revenue and Online Revenue into Y axis valuesRevenue into Y axis values, Channel into Legend (series)
One line per…measurecolumn value
Line namemeasure namecolumn value (Store, Online)
New value in the datayou have to write a new measurea new line appears on its own
Best fordifferent indicators (Actual, Budget, Prior Year)the same measure split up (by channel, by region)

Warning: as soon as a field is in Legend (series), Y axis values accepts only one measure, and Secondary Y axis values only one too. To plot several measures, remove the Legend.

Secondary Y axis values

This field lets you compare two quantities on very different scales: revenue of €40,000 and a margin rate of 36% would be unreadable on the same axis (the rate would stay stuck to zero). The measures dragged here are drawn as dashed lines and read on a second axis, on the right. The Secondary Y axis card in the Format pane only appears when this field contains a measure.

  • Without a Legend: one dashed line per measure.
  • With a Legend: a single measure, and one dashed line per series (one for Store, one for Online).

Small multiples

Drag a column into Small multiples: Line Plume draws one small chart per value of that column, in a grid (one panel per region, for example). By default, panels share the same Y axis, so heights can be compared; Small multiples › Y axis = Independent per panel gives each one its own scale. Hover and selection work panel by panel.

Reference lines (measures) ★

One line per measure. If the measure has the same value everywhere (a fixed target, a What-if parameter), the line is flat. If it changes along the X axis (a different target each month), the line is drawn as steps. With a Legend, one line per series, in the series color. The value also shows in the tooltip. You set the look in the Analytics pane, Reference lines ★ card, Lines from measures group. This field used to be called "Horizontal lines (measures) ★".

Vertical lines (events) ★

A single measure, of one of these three types:

  • text: a vertical line at each x where the measure is not blank, with that text as its label;
  • date: a vertical line at that date;
  • 1/0: a vertical line wherever the measure is not 0.
// A vertical line in April 2025, labeled "New website", nothing elsewhere.
Milestone =
SWITCH ( MAX ( Sales[Month] ), DATE ( 2025, 4, 1 ), "New website", BLANK () )

Annotations (text) ★

A text measure: each non-blank value becomes an annotation pinned to the matching point (x, series). With a Legend, the measure is computed for each series: a measure that ignores the series therefore annotates every line. See the how-to guide "How do I explain a peak with an annotation?".

Lower bound and Upper bound (error bars)

Two measures that give the interval around each point (uncertainty, forecast range). They are used when Analytics › Error bars is turned on (a free feature). Depending on Bounds, they hold the lower and upper values themselves, or deltas (±) to add to the value; a single delta field is used on both sides.

Series name (measure)

A text measure that renames each series of the legend (or the first series, without a Legend), for example "Sales " & [Year]. To rename a series by hand, use Per-series settings › Display name (empty = field name).

Tooltips and Dynamic format

Tooltips: measures added to the tooltip. Dynamic format: drive any Format pane setting with a measure. See the shared basics.

Format pane settings

The cards are described in the order of the Format pane, followed by those of the Analytics pane.

The cards shared by all Plume visuals (Plume Studio License, Style, Interactions (shared settings), Tooltips, Title, Source note, Frame, Language and numbers) are described once in the shared basics: they are not repeated here. The background and rounded corners are set in the Frame card, and the fx button (conditional formatting from a measure) is available on every color and every text.

Data colors

This card decides the color of each line. It is "dynamic": below the coloring mode, one color per series appears.

End-of-line labels ★

Names the series right at the end of each line, instead of a legend: the eye no longer has to go back and forth between the line and the legend. The free Minimal style turns them on by itself, with no watermark as long as you don't touch them; turned on or adjusted by hand, they are ★.

Annotations ★

Comments pinned to a point on the line (an x value and a series). Unlike a text box placed on the page, the annotation follows the line when you filter or resize, and disappears if its point is no longer displayed. Reference lines ★

The Analytics pane (the magnifying glass icon next to the Format pane) contains five cards: Reference lines ★, Vertical lines ★, Error bars (free), Moving average ★ and Trend ★. Everything is computed in the visual, with no DAX.

This first card (formerly "Horizontal lines ★") draws horizontal reference lines: a target, the average, the median, a record, a target zone.

The Line 1, Line 2 and Line 3 groups have the same settings. Only the default for Value changes. Computed values (average, median…) use the series of the primary Y axis, unless set otherwise in Per-series settings › Counted in computed lines.

Trend ★

A trend is an "ideal" curve that sums up the direction of the data. It can be extended into the future (the forecast), with a forecast interval: a band that shows the margin of uncertainty. The card used to be called "Trend and forecast ★".

  • Linear: steady growth, always by the same amount.
  • Exponential: growth that speeds up (a constant percentage).
  • Logarithmic: strong growth at first, which then slows down.
  • Polynomial and Power: more flexible shapes, to be used with care for forecasts.
  • Exponential smoothing (Holt): follows the recent level and slope, a good default choice for forecasting.
  • Seasonal (Holt-Winters): for data that repeats every year (Christmas sales, tourist season). With fewer than two full seasons, the visual falls back to Holt.
