Candle Plume: 10 how-to guides
Step by step: weeks or months without changing the table, a 200-day average from the first candle, purchase prices as candles, minute sessions, indicators, positions.

How do I see weeks or months without changing the table?
Your prices are daily and you want a long view.
- Click 1W (weeks) or 1M (months) in the visual's bar.
- To always open the report in weeks: Format › Data and timeframe › Default timeframe = 1 week.
- To offer only a few buttons to readers: Timeframes offered to readers =
1D 1W 1M.
Result: each candle groups its days (first open, high, low, last close, total volume), with no extra measure. The visual only groups upward: with daily data, the minute and hour buttons do not show.
How do I start a 200-day average from the first candle shown?
A date slicer removes the history: the average would start empty in the middle of the chart.
- Remove the date filter from the visual (or from the page).
- Use the 1M, 3M, 6M, YTD, 1Y, 5Y or All buttons, which move the window without filtering.
- Or set Format › Data and timeframe › Display from =
2025-01-01: earlier bars are only used for the calculation.
Result: the 200-bar average is drawn from the first visible candle. If history is really missing, the visual says so ("SMA 200: 143 / 200 bars").
How do I follow purchase prices recorded every day?
A small business records the copper price every day and wants one candle per month.
- Drag the date to Date / time and the price measure to Price (single value). With one price per day and a one-day timeframe, each bar has a single price: the visual draws a line (Format › Layout › Chart type = Automatic, the default setting).
- Format › Data and timeframe › Default timeframe = 1 month.
Result: each bar now groups several prices, and the line becomes one candle per month, from the first price of the month to the last, with the highest and lowest prices paid. The buyer sees at a glance the volatile months (long wicks) and the calm ones.
How do I leave out the night in minute data?
Readings come in all day long, but only the 09:00 to 17:30 session matters.
- Format › Data and timeframe › Market session (intraday) =
09:00-17:30. - Click 15m or 1H in the visual's bar.
Result: readings outside the session are ignored; 1H and 4H candles start at 09:00, not at midnight.
How do I add RSI, MACD and other indicators? ★
You want the strength of the move under the prices, in a separate pane.
- In edit mode, click Indicators in the visual's bar.
- Type "rsi" in the search box, then click RSI in the list. Set the length in the row that appears under On the chart.
- The chosen indicators are written to Format › Indicators › Indicators (one per line): you can also type
macd 12 26 9orichimoku, one line per indicator. - The three most common ones also have shortcuts: Format › Indicators › Bollinger Bands ★, RSI ★ and MACD ★.
Result: RSI and MACD each show in a pane under the prices, with their levels; their values follow the mouse in the legend.
SMA and EMA moving averages and the median, typical and average prices are free; Bollinger, RSI, MACD and the other indicators are ★: with no key, they show with a watermark.
How do I mark events on the chart?
You want to see the dates that matter on the candles: results, a price increase, a change of supplier.
- Create a text measure that returns a text on the relevant days:
Event = SWITCH ( MAX ( Prices[Date] ), DATE ( 2025, 3, 14 ), "Supplier price increase", BLANK () )
- Drag it to Event text. To pick the icon, add a second measure to Event type ("buy", "sell", "flag", a letter…).
- If the labels hide the candles: Format › Annotations › Label background = Transparent.
- A long text is no longer cut: it wraps. Set its width with Format › Annotations › Label width (px) (180 by default) and the number of lines with Maximum lines (3 by default); beyond that, the last line ends with "…".
Result: a marker with its text on each relevant date. In 1W, several events of the same week are grouped with a counter.
How do I annotate a candle with the mouse? ★
You comment a chart for a meeting, without touching the data model.
- In edit mode, click Annotate, then a candle.
- Type the text, pick the icon and Above or Below, then press Enter.
- Click an annotation to edit or delete it; press Esc to finish.
Result: the annotations are saved in the report. Their list is in Format › Annotations › Manual annotations ★: copy it to another report.
How do I show buys and sells with their result? ★
You want to check what a simple buying rule would have earned.
- Create a measure that returns 1 when you are long, 0 otherwise (−1 for a short sale), and drag it to Position state.
- Format › Positions › Statistics panel and Equity curve: on.
- Or, in edit mode, the Position button › Long, click the entry candle then the exit candle, then set the stop and target in the bubble.
Result: each change of state opens or closes a position, drawn in green when it wins and in red when it loses, with its result, %, duration and risk / reward. The panel gives the win rate, the net result and the maximum drawdown.
How do I compare two stocks? ★
You want to know which of two stocks gained the most since a date.
- Drag the symbol to Symbol (series).
- Format › Data and timeframe › Compare series in % ★: on.
Result: the other stocks show as lines, in % from the first visible bar; move the window to change the starting point.
How do I keep a small chart readable?
On a narrow visual, the legend and the labels take up room.
- Leave Format › Legend › Keep room for the legend on (the default): the price scale keeps the height of the legend free.
- Lower Format › Legend › Size (for example to 9).
- Make the labels transparent: Format › Annotations › Label background and Format › Positions › Label background = Transparent.
Result: the candles no longer run under the legend text, and the labels let you see the candles and the position zones.
