Basic Slicer Plume: every field and setting explained

Every field well and every Format pane setting in Basic Slicer Plume: what it's for, the values it accepts and its default value, card by card, in order.

Lire en français

This page describes everything Basic Slicer Plume offers: the field wells, then each card in the Format pane, in the order they appear. Each setting's default value is in bold, and premium features are marked with a ★. For a first guided visual, see getting started.

The visual's fields

Field (exact name)Required? How many fieldsWhat to drop inWhat it doesExample
Field (or hierarchy levels)Yes1 to 6Columns (text, number, Boolean, date)The values in the menu; several columns form a hierarchy. This is what the filter applies to.Category, then Product
Count (optional)No1An additive measureNumber shown to the right of each value, sorting by count, detection of values without dataOrder Count
PreselectionNo1A measure that returns textValues selected when the report opens ★Preselected Products

Field (or hierarchy levels). One column gives a simple list. Several columns do not give several menus side by side (for that, use Filter Bar Plume) but a tree: the first column is the top level, the next one goes underneath it, and so on. Checking a parent checks all its children; a half-filled checkbox means only some of the children are checked. 1 or 2 levels are free; 3 to 6 levels are a ★ feature. The Hierarchy card in the Format pane only appears from 2 levels on.

Count (optional). A single measure. A parent shows the sum of its children: a non-additive measure would give wrong totals. Without a count, the menu works but shows no numbers, sorting by count is meaningless, and values without data aren't detected.

Preselection. A measure that returns, as text, the value or values to check when the report opens, separated by ; ("Lighting;Garden"). The visual looks for them in every level, the first one first; "Parent › Value" targets a specific node when the same label exists under several parents. The comparison ignores case, accents and spaces. Settings: Preselection card; premium feature ★, details in the shared basics.

This visual has no Tooltips well. Dynamic format: see the shared basics.

Layout

The form of the slicer (dropdown, list or tile buttons), then the settings for the menu, the collapsed box and the tiles.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
StyleDropdown: a one-line box whose list opens when clicked. Vertical list: the values stay displayed in the frame, like the native slicer's list, and scroll if needed. Tile: one button per value, side by side, like the native slicer's Tile style (one level only).Dropdown / Vertical list / Tile
Menu opening (appears if Style = Dropdown)Auto: below the box if at least 120 px are left in the frame, otherwise as a full-frame panel with a close button. Below the box: always below the box. Full frame: always as a panel taking up the whole frame.Auto / Below the box / Full frame

Fixed button height (px, 0 = auto) (appears if Style = Tile)Gives every button the same height, like the native slicer's "Fixed size"; a scroll bar appears if needed. 0: automatic height.0 to 200 (0)

Tip: a Power BI visual can't draw outside its frame. So the menu opens inside the Basic Slicer Plume frame: making that frame taller toward the bottom (steps 8 to 10 of the walkthrough) is what lets it go over the visual below.

Selection

How a click picks values.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
ModeMultiple (click = toggle): each click checks or unchecks. Multiple with Ctrl: a simple click replaces the selection, Ctrl + click adds. Single value: radio buttons, and choosing a value closes the menu.Multiple (click = toggle) / Multiple with Ctrl / Single value
IndicatorThe marker in front of each value. Automatic adapts it to the mode; None (highlight) keeps only the tinted background.Automatic / Checkbox / Radio button / None (highlight)
Always keep one value selected (appears if Mode = Single value)Prevents unchecking everything: no ×, no Clear button and no Delete key are offered. On / Off
"Select all" row (appears if Mode = Multiple (click = toggle) or Multiple with Ctrl)Adds a row at the top of the menu that checks or unchecks everything. On / Off
"Select all" label (appears if "Select all" row is on)Replaces the text of this row.Free text (empty)
Move selection to the topPlaces checked values at the top of the menu.On / Off

With the keyboard: Enter, Space or ↓ opens the menu; ↑ ↓ to move; → expands (or goes to the first child); ← collapses (or goes back up to the parent); Space or Enter checks; Home / End; Esc closes the menu and returns focus to the box; Delete clears the selection. In the List layout, Tab goes straight to the values. Right-clicking a value opens the Power BI context menu.

Hierarchy

How the tree behaves. This card only appears with at least 2 columns in Field (or hierarchy levels).

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
Levels expanded on openNumber of levels already expanded when the menu opens. 0: only the top-level categories are visible.0 to 5 (0)
Expand all / Collapse all buttonsAdds two buttons above the values. On / Off
Indent per level (px)How far each level is shifted to the right.0 to 40 (16)
Child count on parentsShows "(n)" next to each parent: its number of children. On / Off
Parent in the box (Parent › Value) (appears if Style = Dropdown)Writes "Decor › Vase" in the closed box instead of "Vase".On / Off
Restrict to leaf nodesLike the native list slicer: parents expand but can't be selected; only the values of the last level can be checked. On / Off

Values

The order, the count and the look of the values.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
SortOrder of the values. Model order follows the order of the data or the sort column defined in the model. Sorting by count uses the Count (optional) measure.Model order / Label A → Z / Label Z → A / Count, descending / Count, ascending
Natural sort (2 before 10)Sorts numbers inside labels as numbers: "M2" before "M10".On / Off
Show the countShows the count measure to the right of the values. On / Off
Display units (appears if Show the count is on)Abbreviates large numbers.Auto / None / Thousands / Millions / Billions
Decimals (-1 = auto) (appears if Show the count is on)Number of digits after the decimal point for the count; -1 lets the visual choose.-1 to 6 (-1)
Values without dataWhat to do with values that no longer have data under the current filters. Requires a measure in Count (optional) and Show items with no data on the field.Grouped at the bottom, dimmed / In place, dimmed / Hidden
Blank labelText shown for a column's blank value (cells with no content).Free text (empty)
Wrap labelsLets long labels wrap onto the next line.On / Off
SeparatorsDraws a thin line between values. On / Off
Tinted background when selectedColors the background of checked values. On / Off

A search box at the top of the menu. It ignores accents and capitalization; in a hierarchy, the values found are shown with their parents expanded.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
ShowShows or hides the search box (card toggle). On / Off
PlaceholderGrayed-out text shown in the empty box.Free text (empty)
MatchingContains: the text can be anywhere. Starts with: the value must start with the text. Word start: one of the words must start with the text.Contains / Starts with / Word start
Highlight matchesHighlights the typed text in the results. On / Off

Preselection

Selects values when the report opens: drop into the Preselection field a measure that returns a value or a list ("Paris;Lyon"). Premium feature ★: without a key, it applies with the watermark. Without a measure, this card has no effect. The details (measure format, bookmarks, persistent filters) are in the shared basics.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
ApplyOnce per session: the preselection applies the first time the slicer is displayed, then the reader is in control (if they change the selection, it doesn't come back when they switch pages). Reapply on every display: it comes back every time the page is displayed and whenever the measure's value changes.Once per session / Reapply on every display
ForceReplaces an existing selection: saved in the report, recalled by a bookmark or by persistent filters. When off, that selection is kept and the preselection doesn't apply. On / Off
Value separatorCharacter that separates the values in the text returned by the measure ("Paris;Lyon").Free text (;)
Report values not found (edit mode)In edit mode, flags in the visual the measure's values that don't exist in the list (typo, filtered-out value). Readers never see this message. On / Off

Frame: extra setting and default values

This visual's Frame card has one more option than the standard version:

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
Transparent backgroundRemoves the visual's background. Essential so that only the one-line box is visible when the menu is closed. On / Off

Its default values also differ from the other visuals: Border off and Inner padding of 2 px. The background of the Power BI container (Format › General › Effects › Background) is a Power BI setting that the visual can't turn off itself: turn it off manually.

Shared cards (Plume Studio License, Style, Frame, Language and numbers): see the shared basics.
