Basic Slicer Plume: 8 how-to guides (list, bookmarks, hierarchy…)
Show values as a list, sync the slicer across pages, save a selection in a bookmark, allow only one value at a time, and build a three-level hierarchy.
Lire en françaisThese recipes assume a Basic Slicer Plume is already in place. If it isn't, start with getting started: the examples reuse its data. Features marked ★ are premium: they work without a license, with a watermark.
How do I keep the values always visible, like the native list slicer?
In a side column, readers should see all the values without opening a menu.
- In Format › Layout, set Style to Vertical list.
- Give the frame the list height you want; beyond that, the list scrolls.
- In Format › Header, turn on Show value / selection count if you want to see how many values are checked.
Result: the values (or the tree) stay displayed below the header, with the Clear button in the header. No need to turn off the background or bring the visual to the front: nothing opens over the report. This style is free. For buttons side by side instead of a list (one level only), choose Tile and set Columns.
How do I sync the slicer across several pages?
Readers pick their categories on the first page and want to find them again on the next pages: that's slicer sync, a Power BI feature.
-
Select Basic Slicer Plume on the first page.
-
In the ribbon, select View › Sync slicers. The Sync slicers pane lists the report's pages.
-
In the sync column (circular arrows icon), check each page that should share the selection.
-
In the visibility column (eye icon), check the pages where the menu should also be displayed. Power BI places a copy of the visual there.
-
On each new page, redo the overlay settings: taller frame, Bring to front, background turned off.
Result: check "Kitchen" on one page and it's checked on all synced pages, hierarchy included.
How do I save a selection in a bookmark?
You want a "Home department" button that checks the right categories in one go. A bookmark (see the glossary) is a snapshot of the page's state, slicer selections included.
- In the menu, check Decor and Lighting, then close it.
- In the ribbon, select View › Bookmarks, then click Add in the Bookmarks pane.
- Open the new bookmark's … menu › Rename, and name it "Home".
- In the same menu, make sure Data is checked: this is the option that saves slicer selections.
- Select Insert › Buttons › Blank, then in Format › Action, choose the Bookmark type and the "Home" bookmark.
- Clear the selection with the × in the box, then Ctrl + click the button (in edit mode).
Result: Decor and Lighting are checked again in the menu and the page is filtered. A selection of specific products (sub-levels) is restored the same way.
How do I open the report with categories already checked? ★
When it opens, the report should show lighting and garden right away, without a bookmark or a click from the reader: preselection checks the values returned by a measure.
- With the
Salestable selected, Modeling › New measure:
Preselected Categories = "Lighting;Garden"
- Drag
Preselected Categoriesinto the visual's Preselection well. - In Format › Preselection, leave Apply on Once per session.
- Clear the selection (× in the box), save the report, close it and reopen it.
Result: both categories are checked with all their products, and the box says so. The visual looks for each value in every level; if the same label exists under two parents, write Home › Lighting. A selection saved in the report or recalled by a bookmark is kept; turn on Force to replace it.
How do I stop the slicer from filtering a specific visual?
The "Total orders" card must stay on the total, whatever category is chosen.
- Select Basic Slicer Plume.
- In the ribbon, select Format › Edit interactions.
- Above the card, click the None icon (circle with a slash).
- Click Edit interactions again to leave this mode.
Result: the card ignores the slicer; the other visuals stay filtered.
How do I allow only one value at a time?
A page that compares products only makes sense for a single category.
- In Format › Selection, set Mode to Single value.
- Turn on Always keep one value selected.
Result: radio buttons replace the checkboxes, choosing a value closes the menu, and the clear (×) button disappears: one value always stays chosen.
How do I build a three-level Department › Category › Product hierarchy? ★
The catalog is organized by department, then category, then product.
- In the Field (or hierarchy levels) well, drag
DepartmentaboveCategory. The order becomesDepartment,Category,Product. - In Format › Hierarchy, set Levels expanded on open to 1: categories are visible as soon as the menu opens.
- Turn on Expand all / Collapse all buttons.
- Turn on Format › Search › Show: when you type "vase", the product appears with Home and Decor expanded.
Result: a three-level menu. Without a license key, it works with the "Premium preview" watermark.
How can I tell, with the menu closed, which category the chosen product belongs to?
"Vase" alone in the box doesn't say where it comes from.
- In Format › Hierarchy, turn on Parent in the box (Parent › Value).
- Also turn on Child count on parents to see how many products each category contains.
Result: the closed box shows "Decor › Vase", and each parent in the menu shows its number of children in parentheses.
