Table Plume: every field and setting explained

Every field well and every Format pane setting in Table Plume, including per-column settings: what each one does, its possible values, and its default.

Lire en français

This page describes everything Table Plume offers: the field wells, then each card of the Format pane, in the order they appear. Each setting's default value is in bold, and premium features carry a ★. For a guided first visual, see the getting started guide.

The visual's fields

Field well (exact name)Required? How many fieldsWhat goes in itWhat it's forExample
ColumnsYesAs many as neededColumns (text, date, number) and measuresThe table's columns, in the order of the wellProduct, Category, Revenue, Margin Rate
Sparkline axisNo1A date or number columnDraws each measure as a sparkline along this axis ★Month, Year
Cell elements fieldsNoSeveralMeasures or columns (not displayed)Drive the color, icon or link of the displayed columns (Cell elements card)Margin Color, Product Page

Dynamic formatNoSeveralMeasuresDrive a Format pane setting with a DAX formulaTable Density renamed grid.density

Columns. This is the only required well. It mixes columns and measures, like the native table:

  • Each column (text, date…) splits the table: one row per distinct combination. With Product alone: 6 rows; with Product and Year: 12 rows.
  • Each measure adds a column of values. Can you put several series in it? Yes: each measure is a column, with no limit.
  • The order of the well is the display order. Drag a field within the list to move it.
  • Numbers and dates use the format defined in the model, unless you change it in Column formatting.

Sparkline axis ★. Drag a date or a number into it (Month, Date, Year). Each measure then becomes a small chart in each row, drawn along this axis, next to its value or on its own. Dates and numbers are sorted in ascending order; text keeps the order it was received in, which is why a real date or a month number works best. Columns that aren't measures (Product, Category) still produce one row each: the visual groups each row's points together. Left empty, the table is a regular table. Details in the Sparklines card and in the dedicated how-to guide.

Cell elements fields. Measures or columns that don't become table columns: they serve as the base field in the Cell elements card (Based on field). For example a Margin Color measure that returns "#2E7D4F" or "red" depending on the margin rate, a Status measure that returns an icon name (check, warning), or a Product Page measure that returns an https://… address for a link.

Tooltips. Measures shown in each cell's tooltip, below the row's text columns and the hovered value. A report page tooltip can replace this tooltip: see the Tooltips card.

Dynamic format. A measure renamed card.setting replaces the value of a Format pane setting (see the common basics). It never becomes a column. A Table Plume specific: Power BI doesn't offer the fx button to table-type visuals, so this well is the only way to drive a setting with DAX. In Column formatting, only the All columns level can be driven this way.

Warning: a measure in the Dynamic format well that never returns a blank value can bring empty rows back when the table has no other measure.

Format pane settings

Column formatting

This card sets up each column separately: alignment, numbers, colors, conditional formatting, width, group, and total.

How "general setting, then exceptions" works. At the top of the card, a drop-down list (labeled Apply settings to in Power BI) offers:

  • All columns: the general setting. What you set here applies to every relevant column.
  • then the name of each column (Product, Revenue, Margin Rate…): an exception. What you set here applies only to that column, and overrides the general setting.

Example: with All columns, Decimals (-1 = field format) set to 0; then with Margin Rate, Decimals set to 1. Every column is shown with no decimals, except the margin rate, which keeps one.

Good to know:

  • Always check the list before changing a setting. The card's settings apply to the item shown in the list. If it says All columns, you are changing the whole table.
  • The settings offered change with the selected column. For a text column, only alignment, width, group, bold, and colors make sense. Units, decimals, prefix, suffix, conditional formatting, and total only appear for numeric columns. Color settings tied to a conditional formatting option only appear once that option is chosen, and sparkline settings only appear on measures, with a field in Sparkline axis.
  • A measure in the Dynamic format well only drives All columns; an exception set by hand on a column still takes priority.
SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
AlignmentPlaces the column's content on the left, center, or right.Automatic (numbers right), Left, Center, Right
Display unitsShows numbers in thousands, millions, or billions.Auto, None, Thousands, Millions, Billions
Decimals (-1 = field format)Number of digits after the decimal point; -1 keeps the format defined in the model.-1 to 6
PrefixText added before each value (e.g. "≈").Free text (empty)
SuffixText added after each value (e.g. "€", "pts").Free text (empty)
Conditional formattingColors or illustrates each value according to its size: negatives in red, proportional bars, background or text color scale, ▲ ● ▼ icons, colored pill. Numeric columns only.None, Colored negatives, Data bars ★, Background color scale ★, Text color scale ★, Icons (▲ ● ▼) ★, Colored pill ★

Icon rulePicks the icon from the sign of the value, or from the third it falls into (high, mid, low).Sign (positive / zero / negative), Thirds of the values (high / mid / low)
Width (px, 0 = auto)Sets the column width in pixels; 0 calculates it automatically.0 to 800
SparklineType of small chart drawn for this measure along the axis (appears with a field in Sparkline axis). None keeps the value only.None (value only), Line ★, Columns ★
Value next to the sparklineShows the number next to the sparkline; when off, the sparkline takes the full width of the column. On / Off
Sparkline positionPlaces the sparkline before or after the number.Left of the value, Right of the value
Row valueWith an axis, Power BI sends one value per point: this setting chooses the number shown for the row. Automatic sums the values when Power BI confirms the measure can be summed, and otherwise takes the last value (always exact). A sum or an average of rates is approximate.Automatic (sum when it is right, otherwise last value), Sum, Average, Last value, First value, Minimum, Maximum
GroupName of the column group this column belongs to. Neighboring columns with the same name share a header with a + / − button. "›" creates a subgroup: Sales › 2025. Does nothing while Column groups › Collapsible groups ★ is off.Free text (empty)
Stays visible when the group is collapsedKeeps this column displayed when its group is collapsed (useful for a total). On / Off
BoldMakes the column's values bold.On / Off
Text color (empty = values)Color of the column's text.Color (empty)
Background color (empty = none)Background color for the whole column.Color (empty)
Apply to header tooCarries the column's text color, background, bold and alignment over to its header, like "Specific column › Apply to header" in the native table. On / Off
Apply to total tooCarries the same settings over to the column's total cell.On / Off
ImagesShows the value as an embedded image. Automatic: a data:image/… value (or an Image URL category column holding base64) becomes an image. Always: raw base64 and SVG text too. Chunk of the previous column's image: this column continues the previous column's image (text joined back, column hidden), for images longer than 32,766 characters. No web address is ever loaded. Size and fit: Images card.Automatic (data:image…) / Always (raw base64, SVG) / Chunk of the previous column's image / Never (text)
TotalCalculation for the column's total cell. Automatic uses the total calculated by Power BI when there is one, otherwise the sum of the displayed values, and nothing for a column with a percentage format. The other options are calculated over the displayed rows (the search results, if a search is in progress).Automatic (sum, except percentages), Sum, Average, Minimum, Maximum, Count, None

Tip: sorting, resizing with the mouse, and double-clicking the edge of a header (automatic width) are done directly in the table. In edit mode, widths dragged with the mouse are saved in the report.

Cell elements

The free equivalent of the native table's conditional formatting (Power BI doesn't give the fx button to table-type visuals): background, font, icons and links, driven by the cell's value or by another measure. As in Column formatting, the Apply settings to list picks All columns or a specific column, which wins. The settings shown depend on the chosen mode (a Gradient shows the colors and bounds, Rules shows the rules box).

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
Background colorColors the cell background, like conditional formatting in the native table. Gradient: from the minimum to the maximum color by value. Rules: one color per condition. Field value: a measure that returns the color (#RRGGBB, rgb(), CSS name).None / Gradient / Rules / Field value
Based on fieldThe field whose value decides the color: the column itself, another displayed column, or a field of the Cell elements fields role (not displayed).List of fields ((this column))
Minimum color (empty = style)Color of the smallest values (Gradient mode). Empty: the style's color.Color (empty)
Center color (empty = none)Middle color, for a three-color gradient. Empty: two-color gradient.Color (empty)
Maximum color (empty = style)Color of the largest values. Empty: the style's color.Color (empty)
Minimum (empty = lowest value)Start of the gradient: a number (0), a percentage of the range (10%) or a percentile (p10). Empty: the lowest value.Free text (empty)
Maximum (empty = highest value)End of the gradient: a number (100), a percentage of the range (90%) or a percentile (p90). Empty: the highest value.Free text (empty)
RulesOne rule per line: the condition, then : and the color. Example: >= 100 : #2E7D4F, >= 50 and < 100 : orange, blank : #CCCCCC, else : gray. A % is a share of the range, like "Percent" in Power BI. The first matching rule wins.Free text (empty)
Font colorColors the cell text, with the same modes as Background color.None / Gradient / Rules / Field value
Based on fieldThe field whose value decides the text color (same choices).List of fields ((this column))
Minimum color (empty = style)Color of the smallest values (Gradient mode). Empty: the style's color.Color (empty)
Center color (empty = none)Middle color, for a three-color gradient. Empty: two-color gradient.Color (empty)
Maximum color (empty = style)Color of the largest values. Empty: the style's color.Color (empty)
Minimum (empty = lowest value)Start of the gradient: a number (0), a percentage of the range (10%) or a percentile (p10). Empty: the lowest value.Free text (empty)
Maximum (empty = highest value)End of the gradient: a number (100), a percentage of the range (90%) or a percentile (p90). Empty: the highest value.Free text (empty)
RulesOne rule per line, as for the background.Free text (empty)
Gradient scaleHow the shades of both gradients are spread. Logarithmic ★ spreads out small values; Quantiles (rank) ★ gives each shade the same number of cells.Linear / Logarithmic ★ / Quantiles (rank) ★
IconsAdds an icon to the cell. Rules: a marker set (green / amber / red dots, arrows…) by value; without rules, thirds of the range. Field value: a measure that returns an icon name (green, amber, red, up, down, check, warning…), an emoji, or an SVG / base64 image ★.None / Rules / Field value
Based on fieldThe field whose value picks the icon (same choices).List of fields ((this column))
Icon setThe set of three markers used by the rules (high, mid, low).Green / amber / red dots / Arrows / Triangles / Symbols (✓ ! ✗) / Flags / Shapes (circle, diamond, triangle) / Stars
Icon rulesOne rule per line, then : and the icon: high, mid, low (in the chosen set) or a name (green, up, check, star…). Example: >= 0.1 : high, >= 0 : mid, else : low. Empty: thirds of the range.Free text (empty)
Icon layoutPuts the icon before or after the value, or shows it alone.Left of the value / Right of the value / Icon only
Icon vertical alignmentVertical position of the icon in a tall row.Top / Middle / Bottom
Icon size (px, 0 = text size) ★Icon size in pixels; 0: the text size.0 to 64 (0)

Row groups

This card turns the first columns into title rows: for example a "Lighting" row across the table, then its products indented below, with a + / − button to collapse the group. First put the grouping column (e.g. Category) at the top of the Columns well.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
Group by the first columns ★0: no groups. 1: one title row per value of the first column, with its rows indented below. 2: subgroups by the second column, and so on. Grouping columns are no longer shown as columns; their names move into the title of the first remaining column ("Category › Product").0 to 5

Title color (empty = text) (appears if Group by the first columns ★ is not 0)Color of the title text.Color (empty)

In a grouped table: sorting applies within each group; a search expands the groups that contain matching rows; clicking a title selects all its rows; a double-click, or the → / ← arrow keys, expands or collapses the group. The Toolbar gets Expand all / Collapse all buttons. There is no subtotal per group: the total row covers all rows (for subtotals, use Matrix Plume).

First column

The leftmost column, often the label column.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
Frozen when scrolling horizontallyKeeps the first column visible when you scroll the table to the right. On / Off
BoldMakes the first column bold.On / Off

AlignmentPosition of the image in its cell. By default, the column's alignment.Same as the column / Left / Center / Right
Value that is not an imageWhat a cell shows when its value isn't a valid image. A web address is never loaded: only embedded images (base64 or data URI) are shown.Blank cell / Original text

Toolbar

This card adds a bar above the table: search, row count, and, with row groups, Expand all / Collapse all.

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
ShowShows the toolbar (the card's toggle). On / Off
Search in the tableAdds a search box that looks in every column; it ignores accents and capitalization. Search only changes what is displayed: it doesn't filter the rest of the report. On / Off
PlaceholderGrayed-out text shown in the empty search box (e.g. "Search for a product").Free text (empty)
Row countShows the number of rows and, during a search, the number of matching rows out of the total. On / Off

Pause on mouse hover (appears if Auto-scroll ★ is on)Pauses scrolling when the mouse is over the visual. On / Off

Any reader action (mouse wheel, click, keyboard, touch, scroll bar) suspends scrolling for about 4 seconds, then it resumes from where it got to.

Tooltips

The tooltip shown when hovering over a cell. Report page tooltips are supported (a page sized as Tooltip, chosen in Power BI's Format › General › Tooltips).

SettingWhat it doesOptions (default in bold)
ShowShows the tooltip when hovering over a cell, with the Tooltips fields; a report page tooltip replaces it when one is chosen (card toggle). On / Off
