KPI Plume: every field and Format pane setting explained

Every field well and every setting in the KPI Plume Format pane: what each one does, its possible values, its default value and premium features.

Lire en français

This page describes everything KPI Plume offers: the field wells, then each card of the Format pane, in the order they appear. The default value of each setting is in bold, and premium features carry a ★. For a guided first visual, see getting started.

One KPI per measure: matching by rank

Each measure in the Values (one KPI per measure) field becomes a card. Its position in the field is its rank: the 1st measure has rank 1, the 2nd rank 2, and so on. The Comparison (previous year…), Comparison 2 (budget…), Target, Back of the card (text) and Icon (text measure) fields are matched by rank: their 1st measure goes with the 1st value, their 2nd with the 2nd, and so on.

Example: Values = Revenue, Order count, Margin rate and Target = Revenue target, Margin target. By rank, Order count would get Margin target, and Margin rate would have no target. To fix this without changing the order of the fields, open Format › Per-KPI settings, choose the measure in Apply settings to, then:

  • for Order count: “Target” field number (0 = same rank, -1 = none) = -1 (no target);
  • for Margin rate: “Target” field number (0 = same rank, -1 = none) = 2 (the 2nd measure of the Target field).

“Comparison” field number (0 = same rank, -1 = none) does the same for the Comparison (previous year…) field. A target can also be typed without a measure: Fixed target (0 = “Target” field) then replaces the field for this KPI.

The other matched fields (Comparison 2 (budget…), Back of the card (text), Icon (text measure)) always follow the rank. To leave a KPI without a value, drag a blank measure into its rank, for instance Blank = BLANK ().

Values (one KPI per measure)

  • The order of the field is the order of the cards, unless Layout › KPI order sorts them differently.
  • The card title is the measure name (rename it in the field, or type Per-KPI settings › Title (empty = measure name)).
  • The measure's format ($, %, decimals) is used; Per-KPI settings can change it (units, decimals, prefix, suffix).
  • A blank measure shows "—" or the text of Value › Text when blank; Layout › Hide blank KPIs removes those cards.

Comparison and Comparison 2 ★

Comparison (previous year…) gives the main change, under the value. Without this field, and with a Trend axis (date), the change compares the last period with the previous one (for instance December with November). Comparison › Compare with forces one source or the other.

Comparison 2 (budget…) ★ adds a second change under the first one: for instance vs last year and vs budget. It always compares the displayed value with the measure of the same rank in this field. It appears if Comparison › Comparison 2 (“Comparison 2” field) is on; its label is set in Per-KPI settings › Comparison 2 label. Without a license key, the watermark appears as soon as this second change is shown.

Target

One measure per KPI, matched by rank or chosen with “Target” field number. The shape (bar, ring ★, bullet ★, text) is set in the Target card. The target can also decide the card's color: see Comparison › Card status (good, warning, bad).

Trend axis (date)

A single column, preferably a date (month, week, year). The visual reads up to 2,000 periods. With this axis, the figure shown is by default the period total computed by the measure; if no total is available, it is the last period. Value › Displayed value (with a trend axis) lets you show the last period, the average, etc. instead.

Dates are read correctly even when Power BI sends them as text ("2025-11-30T23:00:00.000Z"), put back in order and written with the column's format; monthly dates are written "Dec 2025". Sparkline › Period format (empty = automatic) sets another format.

One KPI per… (category)

With Region, each KPI is repeated for each region: 3 measures × 4 regions = 12 cards. The title of each card is the region ("North · Revenue" when there are several measures). Layout › “Total” card (with “One KPI per…”) adds a total card first. A click on a card then filters the rest of the report on that region (see the Interactions card).

Back of the card (text) and Back of the card: figures

Back of the card (text): a measure that returns text (a definition, a comment), shown on the back of the KPI of the same rank. Priority order of the back text: the text typed for this measure in Per-KPI settings › Back of the card text, then the measure in this field, then the text typed for All KPIs.

Back of the card: figures: measures shown only on the back, with their name and format (8 at most; the following ones are ignored). They come first among the key figures of the back. Choose which ones to show for each KPI in the Back of the card: content per KPI card: each measure has its own switch there, under its name. They are shown when Back of the card › Key figures is All available.

Icon (text measure)

A measure that returns, for the KPI of the same rank, one of these values:

  • an icon key of the visual (trendUp, euro, cart…) or a Lucide icon name (trending-up, shopping-cart…), case-insensitive;
  • an emoji or a short symbol (🚚, ✔): the first 8 characters are shown;
  • an embedded image starting with data:image/ (SVG, PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP), for instance data:image/svg+xml;utf8,….

A web address (https://…) is never loaded: the visual makes no external request. A blank value keeps the icon of Per-KPI settings › Icon. Example, an icon per category:

Region icon = SWITCH ( SELECTEDVALUE ( Sales[Region] ), "Export", "globe", "Web", "click", "store" )

Title and Note (text measures)

One measure per KPI, matched by rank like the other fields. Title (text measure) replaces the title typed in Per-KPI settings: for example Revenue title = "Revenue " & SELECTEDVALUE ( Calendar[Year] ) writes "Revenue 2025" and follows the year slicer. Note (text measure) writes a note below the value; the placeholders {value}, {ref}, {delta}, {target}, {progress} and {period} are replaced, as in Per-KPI settings › Note under the value. A blank measure keeps the Per-KPI settings text. In the Dynamic format field, measures named kpiFormat.title and kpiFormat.note give the same title or note to every KPI.

Reference labels and details

Like the native card's reference labels: each measure in Reference labels is shown below the value, with its name and value (for example Revenue PY and Share of total), and the measure of the same rank in Reference labels: details writes a detail line below it ("vs 2024", a date…). By default, each card shows every label; Reference labels › KPIs concerned = By rank spreads them out (the 1st label with the 1st KPI…). Formatting: Reference labels card.

Tooltips and Dynamic format

Tooltips: the measures you add are shown in the tooltip of each card, after the value, the comparison, the change and the target; they can also appear on the back (“Tooltips” fields switch of the Back of the card: content per KPI card). Dynamic format: a measure renamed card.setting drives any setting (example: kpiFormat.backText). KPI Plume specifics: no fx button (Power BI doesn't offer it for this type of visual), the visual reads the value of a Dynamic format measure at the grand total level, and in Per-KPI settings only the All KPIs level can be driven this way. See the shared basics for both fields.

Format pane settings

The cards are described in the order of the Format pane. KPI Plume has no settings in the Analytics pane.

Some styles of the Style card also change KPI Plume settings, only if they are still at their default value: Minimal (underlined cards, icons without background, changes without badge), Newspaper (rectangles, no icon, line sparkline), Neon (glow on hover, smooth area), Unknown Pleasures (line, ring icons), Pastel (10% tint in the fill), Climate (status bar on the left).

Per-KPI settings

This card sets each KPI separately: title, note, icon, color, number format, favorable direction, comparison labels, target, link and back text.

How "general setting, then exceptions" works. At the top of the card, the Apply settings to list offers:

  • All KPIs: the general setting, applied to every card;
  • then the name of each measure in the Values (one KPI per measure) field: an exception, which applies only to that KPI and overrides the general setting.

Example: with All KPIs, set Display units to Thousands; then with Margin rate, set Display units to None and Decimals (-1 = automatic) to 1. Every card is shown in thousands, except the rate.

Always check the item shown in Apply settings to before changing a setting: on All KPIs, you change every card. With One KPI per… (category), the setting of a measure applies to all its cards (one per region).

  • Places (5): house, building, location, map, hotel.

Icons from earlier versions keep their name: a saved report remains valid.

Back of the card: content per KPI

This card chooses, KPI by KPI, what the back shows. It appears in the pane right after the Per-KPI settings card, and only if Flip › Flip the card is not set to Never.

It works like Per-KPI settings: the Apply settings to list first offers All KPIs (the general setting), then the name of each measure in the Values (one KPI per measure) field (an exception for that KPI). Example: on All KPIs, turn off Minimum, Maximum and Average; then on Revenue, turn Average back on. Only the back of the revenue card shows the average.

The Back figure 1 to Back figure 8 switches carry in the pane the names of the measures in the Back of the card: figures field (the 1st measure of the field, then the 2nd…); there are as many as there are measures in that field. Comparison 2 and change only appears with a measure in Comparison 2 (budget…), and “Tooltips” fields only with a measure in Tooltips.
