Gantt Plume: every field and setting explained

The 19 field wells and every setting in the Format pane and Analytics pane of Gantt Plume: what each one does, its possible values and its default value.

Lire en français

This page describes everything Gantt Plume offers: the field wells, then each card of the Format pane, in the order they appear. The default value of each setting is in bold, and premium features carry a ★. For a guided first visual, see the getting started guide.

Groups (project, phase…)

Drag one column per level, from broadest to finest: portfolio, then project, then phase… up to 6 levels. The order of the fields in the well is the order of the hierarchy: Phase then Project would give phases containing projects. Each group gets a summary bar that runs from the earliest start to the latest end of its tasks; its progress is the average of its tasks weighted by their duration (a 40-day task weighs more than a 2-day task). Without groups, the plan is a simple list of tasks. With automatic coloring and no Color field, the first group level provides the colors.

Task

The name shown in the grid and, by default, next to the bar. Two rows with the same name in the same group go on a single row of the plan, with several bars: this is intended for time off, machines or a task that is interrupted and resumed (setting Rows and hierarchy › Same task = same row (several bars), on by default).

Start and End

Start is required: choose the column itself, not its Date Hierarchy. Otherwise the visual explains the problem in edit mode and does not draw the bars. End is optional:

  • with an end, the bar runs from start to end; by default, the end date is included (a task from the 3rd to the 5th lasts 3 days, setting Time axis › End date included);
  • with no end but a Duration, the bar is extended by that duration;
  • with neither an end nor a duration, the task becomes a milestone.

Dates with a time are respected: switch to the Hours scale for workshop or field service schedules.

Duration (when there is no end)

A measure that returns a number, added to the start date in the unit chosen in Time axis › Durations counted in: Business days by default (weekends and holidays are skipped), Calendar days or Hours. Useful when your source contains "start + number of days" instead of an end date. Fill in either End or Duration, not both.

// If your table has a Days column (number of working days planned)
Duration (days) =
SUM ( Tasks[Days] ) // one row per task: the sum returns that task's number

Progress (%)

A measure between 0 and 1, or between 0 and 100: the visual recognizes both. It fills the bar with the completed share (setting Bars › Progress inside the bar), appears in the Progress column and feeds the computed status ★ (late, at risk…). Blank: the bar is not filled.

Owner / resource

A text column with the name of the person, team or machine. It feeds the Owner column of the grid, the By owner coloring, the Task and owner label and, above all, the Resources view ★ (one row per owner). Only one column: for several people on a task, duplicate the task row, one per person.

Color (team, type…)

A text column where each value gets its own color: team, type of work, subcontractor… You choose each color in Format › Data colors; it stays attached to its value, even when a filter changes the values displayed. The legend lists these values. Can you put several series in it? No: only one field. To combine two criteria, create a column that concatenates them (for example Team & " · " & Type).

Bar label

A short text column (manually entered status, lot number, remark) written on the bar. As soon as it is filled in, it replaces the default "Task and owner" label. The setting Data labels › Content: “Bar label” field forces it explicitly. In the example, Note shows "Neighbor's appeal" on the building permit. A bar with an empty label keeps the default label (with “Bar label” field, it shows none, except milestones, which keep their name).

Bar color (measure) ★

A measure that returns a color: a #RRGGBB code ("#C0392B") or a color name ("red"). It takes priority over every coloring mode. If it returns a blank value, the bar keeps its usual color: so write the measure to return a color only in the case you want to flag (example: Alert color, in "The data to provide").

Milestone (yes / no)

A column that flags milestones. Recognized values: Yes / No, Oui / Non, True / False, 1 / 0 or "x". Any other non-empty text also makes a milestone and is shown as its type (for example "Delivery", "Committee"). A milestone is drawn with the shape set in the Milestones card (diamond by default) at its start date. Reminder: a task with neither an end nor a duration is a milestone even without this field.

Task ID (for dependencies)

A unique code per task (A3, 125, LOT2-04…), compared without regard to case. It serves two purposes: Predecessors ★ refer to their tasks by this ID, and the Data order (ID) order in the Rows and hierarchy card follows this ID.

Sort order

A number, date or text column that forces the order of tasks and groups. Text sorting is "natural": "Lot 2" comes before "Lot 10". Blank values go last. With this field, the Sort › Sort tasks by setting is only used to break ties. To sort projects, give every task in a project the same value, like the Rank column in the example.

Predecessors ★

A text column that lists, for each task, the tasks it depends on, in MS Project format. It also requires the Task ID (for dependencies) field.

Syntax: IDs separated by ; (or ,). Each ID can be followed by a link type and a lag.

NotationReads asLink type
A3A3 must finish before this task startsFS (finish → start), the default link
A3FS or A3FDSame thing, written out in fullFS in English, FD in French
A4SS or A4DDThis task starts when A4 startsSS (start → start) / DD
A4FFThis task finishes when A4 finishesFF (finish → finish), identical in both languages
A4SF or A4DFThis task finishes when A4 starts (rare)SF (start → finish) / DF
A4SS+15Starts 15 days after A4 startslink + positive lag (wait)
A3FS-2dStarts 2 days before A3 finishesnegative lag (overlap)
3;5SS+2;8FF-1dThree links at once—

Lag units:

UnitMeaning
none, d or jDays, business or calendar depending on Time axis › Durations counted in
ed or ejCalendar days (always, weekends included)
hHours
w or semWeeks
mo or moisMonths
%Percentage of the predecessor's duration (A3FS-25%)

A decimal comma is accepted too (+1,5d). An unknown unit is counted in days and flagged in edit mode.

What the visual does with these links: it draws elbow arrows, always left to right, from the predecessor to the successor. It never moves a task: dates always come from your data. If a successor starts too early for its link, that is a conflict, flagged in red (and in the tooltip). The links also feed the critical path ★.

Warning: an ID that can't be found (missing from the Task ID field, or a task filtered out of the page) shows "unknown predecessor" in edit mode, and the critical path stops there. Circular dependencies (A depends on B, which depends on A) are flagged and excluded from the calculation, without breaking the rest.

Baseline start ★ and Baseline end ★

Two date columns: the baseline, that is, the plan approved at the start. The visual draws a thin gray bar under each actual bar and calculates the variance in business days (▲ late, ▼ ahead). Fill in both. For a task without a baseline, leave these columns empty.

Grid columns

Up to 8 columns (not measures) shown as extra columns in the task grid, in the order of the well: budget, lot, priority, supplier… Numeric columns are summed on group rows (setting Task grid › Sum numeric columns in groups): the project shows the sum of its tasks' budgets.

Tip: the outline number (1, 1.1, 1.1.1…, the "WBS" in MS Project) is not a field: turn it on in Task grid › No. (1, 1.1, 1.1.1…). It follows the displayed order.

Tooltips and Dynamic format

Tooltips: measures added to each bar's tooltip, in addition to the dates, duration, progress and owner (see the common basics). Dynamic format: measures renamed card.setting that drive a Format pane setting (see the common basics). A Gantt-specific example: a measure renamed layout.statusDate that returns FORMAT ( TODAY (), "yyyy-mm-dd" ).

Format pane settings

The cards shared by every Plume visual (Plume Studio License, Style, Tooltips, Title, Source note, Frame, Language and numbers) and the two basic settings of the Interactions card are described in the common basics. Here are the cards specific to Gantt Plume, in the order of the pane. Color and text settings have the fx button: a measure or a rule can drive them.

In Gantt Plume, text size and density are set in Format › Task grid › Text size and Format › Rows and hierarchy › Row height (px). Style specifics in this visual: Minimal removes banded rows and vertical lines, Unknown Pleasures ★ removes banded rows, Neon ★ makes the bars glow.

Critical path ★

The critical path is the sequence of tasks where the slightest delay pushes back the end of the project: these are the tasks with no float. The visual calculates it from the dependencies, on the business-day calendar (weekends and holidays excluded), network by network: two unlinked projects each have their own critical path. The toggle in the card header matches Show.
