This page describes everything Text Plume offers: the field wells, then each card in the Format pane, in the order they appear. Each setting's default value is in **bold**, and premium features are marked with a ★. For a first guided visual, see [getting started](/en/tutorials/text-plume-prise-en-main).

## The visual's fields

| Field (exact name) | Required? | How many fields | What goes in | What it's for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Fields to search** | Yes | 1 to 6 | Columns (text, number, date), from the same table or related tables | The values compared with the typed text. That's what the filter applies to. | `Customer`, then `City` |
| **Also search in** | No | 0 to 2 | Columns related to the fields to search | Columns also searched; the filter still applies to the field | `Postal Code` |
| **Preselection** | No | 1 | A measure that returns text | Search typed when the report opens ★ | `Preselected Search` |
| **Dynamic format** | No | Several | Measures named `card.setting` | Drive a Format pane setting with DAX | — |

**Fields to search.** One column gives a simple search box. Several columns do **not** give several boxes: **chips** under the box pick the column to search (one at a time), or the search covers every column at once (**All fields** chip ★, or **With several fields** = *Search all fields* ★). 1 or 2 columns are free; 3 to 6 columns are a ★ feature. A number or date column is compared with its label ("1200", "3/15/2026") and filtered with the list of matching values. The visual loads up to 100,000 rows; beyond that, a search that goes through the list of values says so ("Search limited to the first N rows loaded"). With 2 columns or more, Power BI no longer syncs the slicer across pages.

**Also search in.** One or two columns where the typed text is also searched, without the filter applying to them: with `City` in **Fields to search** and `Postal Code` here, typing `33` finds the cities of Gironde and the filter applies to the city. The suggestion shows the value found (**Fields › "Also search in" value in suggestions**).

**Preselection.** A measure that returns the text to search when the report opens, one term or a list separated by `;` ("Paris;Lyon"): the visual writes it in the box and applies it, as if the reader had typed it. Settings: **Preselection** card; premium feature ★, details in [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

This visual has no **Tooltips** well. **Dynamic format**: see [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

## Format pane settings

### Header

The title shown above the box, with the count and the **Clear** button.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the header line (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Text | Title text. Empty: the names of the fields, separated by "·". | Free text (**empty**) |
| Size | Title size, in points. | 7 to 36 (**14**) |
| Bold | Makes the title bold. | **On** / Off |
| Italic | Makes the title italic. | On / **Off** |
| Underline | Underlines the title. | On / **Off** |
| Color (empty = text) | Title color. Empty: the style's text color. | Color (**empty**) |
| Background color | Fills the header row's background, like the native title background. | Color (**empty**) |
| Horizontal alignment | Puts the title on the left, in the center or on the right. When centered, the title stays in the middle even with the counter and the Clear button. | ***Left*** / *Center* / *Right* |
| Text wrap | A long title goes on two lines (breaking between words) instead of being cut with "…". | **On** / Off |
| Show divider | Draws a line under the header. | On / **Off** |
| Color (empty = lines) (appears if Show divider is on) | Line color. Empty: the style's line color. | Color (**empty**) |
| Line style (appears if Show divider is on) | Line pattern. | ***Solid*** / *Dashed* / *Dotted* |
| Width (appears if Show divider is on) | Line thickness, in pixels. | 1 to 6 (**1**) |
| Show value / selection count | Shows the number of values of the searched column ("10 values", "10 rows" when searching all fields), then, once filtered, "2 of 10". | **On** / Off |
| "Clear" button | Shows a button in the header that empties the box and removes the filter, visible when some text is typed. | **On** / Off |
| Clear button label (appears if "Clear" button is on) | Replaces the button text. | Free text (**empty** = "Clear") |

### Search

How each typed term is compared with the values.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Matching | *Contains*: the text can be anywhere in the value. *Starts with*: at the start. *Ends with*: at the end. *Is exactly*: the whole value. *Word start*: one of the words of the value starts with the text. *Regular expression ★*: the term is a regular expression (invalid: box in red, "Invalid regular expression", nothing is sent). | ***Contains*** / *Starts with* / *Ends with* / *Is exactly* / *Word start* / *Regular expression ★* |
| Wildcards * and ? ★ | In a term, `*` stands for any characters and `?` for a single character (`FR-*-2026`, `Dup?nt`). A term in quotes is taken literally. The watermark only appears when a term contains a wildcard. | **On** / Off |
| Ignore accents (é = e) | "peri" finds "Périgueux", "Rosch" finds "Rösch". | **On** / Off |
| Hyphens, spaces and apostrophes alike | "Saint Emilion" finds "Saint-Émilion", "l'Isle" finds "l’Isle": hyphens, spaces and straight or curly apostrophes count as the same character. When a Power BI condition wouldn't give the same result, the filter is sent as a list of values. | **On** / Off |
| Match case | Tells "Paris" from "PARIS". The filter is then always sent as a list of values. | On / **Off** |
| Exclude with "-" or "!" (-test, !test) ★ | A term starting with `-` (or `!`) removes the values it matches: `cafe; -harbor`. The watermark only appears when an excluded term is typed. | **On** / Off |
| Minimum characters | Number of characters to type before the filter is sent; below it, "Type at least n characters". **Enter** or the **Filter** button override it. | 1 to 10 (**1**) |

### Input

The box itself: one line or several, several terms, when the filter is sent.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Placeholder | Greyed text shown in the empty box. Empty: "Search in Customer…" (the name of the chosen column), "Search all fields…", or, on several lines, "One value per line, or separated by ;". | Free text (**empty**) |
| Multiple lines (paste a list) ★ | Replaces the one-line box with a text area, to paste or type a list (a column copied from Excel works). **Ctrl + Enter** or the **Filter** button applies the list. The watermark only appears when the list has several terms. | On / **Off** |
| Visible lines (appears if Multiple lines (paste a list) ★ is on) | Height of the text area, in lines. | 2 to 20 (**4**) |
| Term separator | What separates two terms. *; or line break* also accepts tabs and the vertical bar. *None* searches the whole text. A term in quotes keeps its separators; duplicates are removed. Several terms are a ★ feature. | ***; or line break*** / *Semicolon (;)* / *Line break* / *Comma (,) or line break* / *None (whole text)* |
| Several terms | *Any of them (OR)*: a value is kept if it matches one of the terms. *All of them (AND)*: every term. | ***Any of them (OR)*** / *All of them (AND)* |
| Filter | *As you type*: the filter is sent shortly after the last letter. *With Enter or the button*: nothing is sent before **Enter** or a click on **Filter**; "Press Enter to filter" shows under the box. On several lines, **Ctrl + Enter** filters. | ***As you type*** / *With Enter or the button* |
| Delay after typing (ms) (appears if Filter = *As you type*) | Wait after the last letter before the filter is sent. | 0 to 3000 (**400**) |
| "Filter" button | Shows the **Filter** button to the right of the box, when filtering with Enter or on several lines. It is highlighted while the text isn't applied. | **On** / Off |
| Clear (×) button | Shows a cross in the box that empties the text. | **On** / Off |
| Box height (px) (appears if Multiple lines (paste a list) ★ is off) | Height of the one-line box. | 24 to 64 (**34**) |

> **Tip:** **Tip**: pasting an Excel column into the **one-line** box also works: line breaks become `; `.

### Fields

How the visual behaves with several columns in **Fields to search**.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| With several fields | *Pick the field (chips under the box)*: one chip per column, the typed text is applied again when you switch chips (← → arrows on the keyboard). *Search all fields ★*: no chips, the search keeps the rows where at least one column matches; with several terms, each term can be found in a different column. | ***Pick the field (chips under the box)*** / *Search all fields ★* |
| "All fields" chip ★ (appears if With several fields = *Pick the field (chips under the box)*) | Adds a first chip that searches every column at once. The watermark only appears when it's selected. | **On** / Off |
| "All fields" label (appears if With several fields = *Pick the field (chips under the box)*) | Replaces the text of that chip. | Free text (**empty** = "All fields") |
| Field picked on open (0 = all) (appears if With several fields = *Pick the field (chips under the box)*) | The chip selected when the report opens: 1 = the first column, 2 = the second… 0 = **All fields** (★). | 0 to 6 (**1**) |
| "Also search in" value in suggestions | Shows in each suggestion the value found in **Also search in** (the postal code, for example), so readers see why it appears. | **On** / Off |

### Suggestions

The list that opens under the box while typing, for the current term. Values that start with the text come first; when searching all fields, the column name is shown. With the keyboard: ↓ ↑ to move, **Enter** to pick, **Esc** to close. The picked value replaces the term (in quotes if needed) and filters.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the suggestions (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Maximum count | Number of suggestions shown. | 1 to 30 (**8**) |
| Highlight matches | Highlights the part of the suggestion that matches the typed text. | **On** / Off |

### Results

The report line under the box and the filter sent to the report.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Information line | Under the box: number of values found, number of terms, terms not found (full list in the tooltip), warnings. An error shows even when it's off. | **On** / Off |
| When nothing matches | *Show nothing (like Power BI)*: the report is emptied. *Do not filter*: the report stays whole and the line says so. | ***Show nothing (like Power BI)*** / *Do not filter* |
| Filter sent | *Automatic*: a Power BI condition (contains, starts with, is) when it gives exactly the same result as the visual, with no row limit; otherwise the list of matching values. *Condition*: the condition whenever possible (a single text column, at most 2 terms, wildcards only at the start or end), even if Power BI, which takes accents into account, then finds slightly fewer values. *List of matching values*: always the list. | ***Automatic*** / *Condition (contains, starts with…)* / *List of matching values* |
| Blank label | Text shown for the blank value of a column (empty cells). | Free text (**empty** = "(Blank)") |

> **Note:** **Good to know**: the typed text is saved with the filter. A bookmark, coming back to the page or reopening the report brings it back as it was; if the filter was changed elsewhere (synced slicer, another visual), the visual rebuilds the text from the condition or the list, or shows "Restored filter (n values)".

### Preselection

Types a search when the report opens: drop into the **Preselection** field a measure that returns a text or a list ("Paris;Lyon"); the visual writes it in the input box and applies it. Premium feature ★: without a key, it applies with the watermark. Without a measure, this card has no effect. The details (measure format, bookmarks, persistent filters) are in [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Apply | *Once per session*: the preselection applies the first time the slicer is displayed, then the reader is in control (if they change the selection, it doesn't come back when they switch pages). *Reapply on every display*: it comes back every time the page is displayed and whenever the measure's value changes. | ***Once per session*** / *Reapply on every display* |
| Force | Replaces an existing selection: saved in the report, recalled by a bookmark or by persistent filters. When off, that selection is kept and the preselection doesn't apply. | On / **Off** |
| Value separator | Character that separates the values in the text returned by the measure ("Paris;Lyon"). | Free text (**;**) |
| Report values not found (edit mode) | In edit mode, flags in the visual the measure's values that don't exist in the list (typo, filtered-out value). Readers never see this message. | **On** / Off |

### Frame: extra setting

This visual's **Frame** card has one more option than the standard version:

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent background | Removes the visual's background: you can see what's underneath (page background, shape). | On / **Off** |

Shared cards (Plume Studio License, Style, Frame, Language and numbers): see [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

## Premium ★ features of this visual

| Feature | Where to set it |
|---|---|
| Several terms (list), any or all of them | Search box: terms separated by `;` or one per line; **Input › Multiple lines (paste a list) ★** |
| `*` and `?` wildcards | **Search › Wildcards * and ? ★** (a term that contains one) |
| Exclusion `-term` or `!term` | **Search › Exclude with "-" (-test) ★** (an excluded term) |
| Regular expression | **Search › Matching** = *Regular expression ★* |
| Search all fields at once | **Fields › "All fields" chip ★** (selected) or **Fields › With several fields** = *Search all fields ★* |
| 3 to 6 columns | **Fields to search** well (1 or 2 columns are free) |
| Preselection with a measure | **Preselection** field and **Preselection** card |
| Styles, palettes and Theme JSON ★ | **Style** card (see [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume)) |

Nothing is locked: without a key, a ★ feature works and shows a "Plume Visuals · Premium preview" watermark (a badge in edit mode, a pattern across the visual in reading mode); the watermark only appears when the feature is actually used, for example when a term contains a wildcard. See [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume) for the license and [pricing](/en/pricing). The visual inserted with its default settings never shows a watermark.
