This page describes everything Bar Slicer Plume offers: the field wells, then each card in the Format pane, in the order they appear. Each setting's default value is in **bold**, and premium features are marked with a ★. For a first guided visual, see [getting started](/en/tutorials/segment-liste-avec-barres).

## The visual's fields

| Field (exact name) | Required? | How many fields | What to drop in | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Field** | Yes | 1 | A column (text, number, Boolean; date possible) | The values in the list, and the column the slicer filters | `Category` |
| **Measure (bars)** | No | 1 | A numeric measure, preferably additive | Bar length, displayed value, share of total, Top N ★ ranking | `Revenue` |
| **Sort by** | No | 1 | A measure | Sort criterion when **Sort › Sort by** is set to *"Sort by" field, descending* or *ascending* | `Order Count` |
| **Tooltips** | No | Several | Measures | Numbers added to each value's tooltip | `Order Count` |
| **Preselection** | No | 1 | A measure that returns text | Values selected when the report opens ★ | `Preselected Categories` |
| **Dynamic format** | No | Several | Measures named `card.setting` | Drive a Format pane setting with DAX | — |

**Field.** A single column. To filter on several columns at once or on a hierarchy (Category › Product), use Filter Bar Plume or Basic Slicer Plume: Bar Slicer Plume only handles one level. The column is always filtered with the "is one of" rule: the visual can't exclude values ("everything except") other than by checking all the others (**Invert** button).

**Measure (bars).** A single measure, so **a single series**: you can't show two bars per value (revenue and margin, for example). Put the second measure in **Tooltips** or **Sort by**. Without a measure, the visual stays a list slicer with search: no bars, no values, no Top N ★ button. Negative values are shown in their own color (**Bars › Negative values color**); they don't count in the total used for the share.

**Sort by.** Useful for ordering the list by a criterion other than bar length, for example sorting by number of orders while showing revenue. This field only has an effect if **Sort › Sort by** is set to *"Sort by" field, descending* or *"Sort by" field, ascending*.

**Tooltips.** The measures are added to the standard Power BI tooltip, each with its own format (%, $, decimals); report page tooltips are supported. Settings: **Tooltips** card. See [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

**Preselection.** A measure that returns, as text, the value or values to select when the report opens, separated by `;`: for example `Preselected Categories = "Lighting;Garden"`, or a measure that returns the month's best category. The slicer checks these values as if the reader had clicked them. When to apply it and what to do with a bookmark: **Preselection** card. Premium feature ★; details and examples in [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

**Dynamic format.** See [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

### Layout

The layout of the values and how blank values or values without data are handled.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Style | *Vertical list*: one value per row. *Tile grid ★*: tiles across several columns. *Chips (horizontal) ★*: rounded labels side by side. | ***Vertical list*** / *Tile grid ★* / *Chips (horizontal) ★* |
| Columns (appears if Style = *Tile grid ★*) | Number of tile columns. | 1 to 8 (**2**) |
| Fixed tile height (px, 0 = auto) (appears if Style = *Tile grid ★*) | Gives every tile the same height, like "Fixed size" in the native button slicer; a scroll bar appears if they don't fit. 0: automatic height. | 0 to 300 (**0**) |
| Label width (%) (appears if Style = *Vertical list*) | Share of the row width reserved for the value's name. | 15 to 70 (**38**) |
| Wrap labels | Lets long labels wrap onto the next line instead of being cut off. | On / **Off** |
| Alternate rows (appears if Style = *Vertical list*) | Shades every other row to make reading easier. | On / **Off** |
| Separators (appears if Style = *Vertical list*) | Draws a thin line between rows. | On / **Off** |
| Tinted background when selected | Colors the background of selected values. | **On** / Off |
| Blank label | Text shown for the column's blank value (cells with no content). | Free text (**empty**) |
| Values without data | What to do with values that no longer have data under the current filters (you need to turn on **Show items with no data** on the field to receive them). | ***Grouped at the bottom, dimmed*** / *In place, dimmed* / *Hidden* |
| Empty group title (appears if Values without data = *Grouped at the bottom, dimmed*) | Title shown above the group of values without data. | Free text (**empty**) |

### Selection

How a click picks values.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | *Multiple (click = toggle)*: each click checks or unchecks a value. *Multiple with Ctrl*: a simple click replaces the selection, Ctrl + click adds a value, like the native slicer. *Single value*: a click replaces the chosen value. | ***Multiple (click = toggle)*** / *Multiple with Ctrl* / *Single value* |
| Indicator | The marker drawn in front of each value. *Automatic* adapts it to the mode; *None (highlight)* keeps only the tinted background of the chosen values. | ***Automatic*** / *Checkbox* / *Radio button* / *None (highlight)* |
| Always keep one value selected (appears if Mode = *Single value*) | Prevents unchecking everything. If nothing is selected, the visual checks the first value itself. | On / **Off** |
| Alt + click: only this value | Alt + click on a value keeps only that value. | **On** / Off |
| Shift + click: select a range | Shift + click checks all values between the last click and this one. | **On** / Off |
| "Select all" row (appears if Mode = *Multiple (click = toggle)* or *Multiple with Ctrl*) | Adds a row at the top of the list that checks or unchecks all values. | On / **Off** |
| "Select all" label (appears if "Select all" row is on) | Replaces the text of this row. | Free text (**empty**) |
| Move selection to the top | Places checked values at the top of the list. | On / **Off** |

Shortcuts available in the list, whatever the settings: ↑ ↓ to move, Home / End, **Space** or **Enter** to check, **Ctrl + A** to select all visible values, **Ctrl + F** to go to the search box (no hint is shown on screen), **Esc** to clear the search. Right-clicking a value opens the Power BI context menu.

### Bars

The look of the measure bars.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the bars (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Position | *Between label and value*: the bar is on the same line, between the name and the number. *Below the label*: the bar goes under the name, handy for long labels. *Row background*: the bar fills the row background, very compact. | ***Between label and value*** / *Below the label* / *Row background* |
| Scale | *Relative to maximum*: the largest value takes up the full width. *Share of total*: the length represents the value's share of the total. | ***Relative to maximum*** / *Share of total* |
| Thickness (appears if Position = *Between label and value* or *Below the label*) | Bar height, in pixels. | 2 to 30 (**8**) |
| Rounded ends | Rounds the ends of the bars. | **On** / Off |
| Show track | Draws a pale background along the full possible length, behind each bar. Its color is the one set in **Style › Bar track**. | **On** / Off |
| Selected color (empty = accent) | Bar color for selected values. | Color (**empty** = the style's accent color) |
| Unselected color (empty = auto) | Bar color for unselected values. | Color (**empty** = automatic) |
| Negative values color | Color of bars whose measure is negative. | Color (**#c0392b**, red) |
| Minimum width (px) (appears if Position = *Between label and value*) | Minimum width of the bar area between the label and the value: bars never get narrower than this, even with long labels. | 20 to 400 (**60**) |

### Displayed values

The number shown to the right of each value.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the numbers (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Content | *Value*: the measure. *Share of total*: the percentage of the total. *Value and share*: both ("182K · 10%"). | ***Value*** / *Share of total* / *Value and share* |
| Display units | Abbreviates large numbers. *Auto* picks based on the order of magnitude. | ***Auto*** / *None* / *Thousands* / *Millions* / *Billions* |
| Decimals (-1 = auto) | Number of digits after the decimal point; -1 lets the visual decide. | -1 to 6 (**-1**) |
| Prefix | Text placed before the number. | Free text (**empty**) |
| Suffix (e.g. €) | Text placed after the number. Type a space before the symbol to get "182K €". | Free text (**empty**) |
| Color (empty = secondary) | Color of the numbers. Empty: the style's secondary text color. | Color (**empty**) |
| Tabular figures | Gives all digits the same width so numbers line up from one row to the next. | **On** / Off |

### Sort

The order of the values in the list.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Sort by | Sort criterion. *"Sort by" field* uses the measure in the **Sort by** well. *Model order* follows the order defined in the model (for example a column sorted by another column). | ***Measure, descending*** / *Measure, ascending* / *Label A → Z* / *Label Z → A* / *"Sort by" field, descending* / *"Sort by" field, ascending* / *Model order* |
| Natural sort (2 before 10) | Sorts numbers inside labels as numbers: "M2" before "M10". | **On** / Off |
| Sort toggle in the visual | Shows a button that lets readers switch between "Value ↓" and "A → Z". | **On** / Off |

### Search

The search box above the list. Search always ignores accents and capitalization.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the search box (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Placeholder | Grayed-out text shown in the empty box. | Free text (**empty**) |
| Matching | *Contains*: the text can be anywhere. *Starts with*: the value must start with the text. *Word start*: one of the words must start with the text ("linens" finds "Home linens"). | ***Contains*** / *Starts with* / *Word start* |
| Highlight matches | Highlights the typed text in the values found. | **On** / Off |
| "Select results" button | Shows a "Select (n)" button that adds all the values found to the selection at once. | **On** / Off |

### Quick actions

The buttons above the list.

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the action bar (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Top N ★ | Button that selects the N values with the highest measure **at the moment you click**. The selection is then fixed: it isn't recalculated on refresh. Requires a measure in **Measure (bars)**. | **On** / Off |
| N (appears if Top N ★ is on) | Number of values picked by the Top N ★ button. | 1 to 100 (**5**) |
| Invert selection | Button that checks everything except the current selection. Values without data stay excluded. | **On** / Off |
| Paste a list ★ | Button that opens a box where you paste a list (one value per line, or separated by `;` or `,`), for example from Excel. The visual finds these values in the list, then replaces the selection or adds to it. | **On** / Off |
| Style | Look of the buttons. | ***Text chips*** / *Icons only* |

> **Tip:** **Tip**: the ★ buttons are shown by default, but the watermark only appears once one of them has been **clicked** (until the report is reopened). Turn them off if you don't want to offer them to your readers.

### Selection summary

The line below the list that says how much the selection weighs ("3 selected · 1.0M of 1.8M").

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows or hides the summary (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Text ★ | Replaces the summary text. Tokens: `{n}` number of selected values, `{count}` number of values, `{sel}` measure of the selection, `{total}` total, `{pct}` share. | Free text (**empty** = standard text) |
| Share of total on the right | Shows the selection's share of the total, to the right of the summary. | **On** / Off |
| Hide when nothing selected | Hides the summary as long as nothing is selected. | **On** / Off |

### Preselection

Selects values when the report opens: drop into the **Preselection** field a measure that returns a value or a list ("Paris;Lyon"). Premium feature ★: without a key, it applies with the watermark. Without a measure, this card has no effect. The details (measure format, bookmarks, persistent filters) are in [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Apply | *Once per session*: the preselection applies the first time the slicer is displayed, then the reader is in control (if they change the selection, it doesn't come back when they switch pages). *Reapply on every display*: it comes back every time the page is displayed and whenever the measure's value changes. | ***Once per session*** / *Reapply on every display* |
| Force | Replaces an existing selection: saved in the report, recalled by a bookmark or by persistent filters. When off, that selection is kept and the preselection doesn't apply. | On / **Off** |
| Value separator | Character that separates the values in the text returned by the measure ("Paris;Lyon"). | Free text (**;**) |
| Report values not found (edit mode) | In edit mode, flags in the visual the measure's values that don't exist in the list (typo, filtered-out value). Readers never see this message. | **On** / Off |

### Tooltips

The tooltip shown when hovering over a value. The shared settings are described in [the shared basics](/en/tutorials/bien-demarrer-visuels-plume).

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Show | Shows the tooltip on hover, with the measures of the **Tooltips** field and report page tooltips (card toggle). | **On** / Off |
| Measure format | *Each measure's format (model)*: each measure in the **Tooltips** field keeps its own format (%, €, decimals), as in native visuals. *Visual format*: they all follow the **Displayed values** settings. | ***Each measure's format (model)*** / *Visual format (Displayed values)* |
| Share of total | Adds the value's share of the total to the tooltip. | **On** / Off |

### Frame: extra setting

This visual's **Frame** card has one more option than the standard version:

| Setting | What it does | Options (default in **bold**) |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent background | Removes the visual's background: you can see what's underneath (page background, shape). | On / **Off** |
